What happens when you stop waiting for a health crisis to force you to change—and decide to take control of your future instead?
For Tam, that decision became the beginning of a transformation that went far beyond weight loss.
In Episode 9 of the IMPACT Lighthouse Podcast, Travis Barnes sits down with Tam, an IMPACT-X Performance member whose journey took her from 310 pounds to standing at the edge of an airplane 13,000 feet above the ground.
But getting there wasn’t about one dramatic decision, one workout, or one number on the scale.
It was about learning to show up, one step at a time.
Choosing Change Before Change Was Forced on Her
Tam’s motivation began close to home.
After watching her mother experience serious health challenges, she started thinking differently about her own future. As she approached 50, Tam realized she didn’t want to wait until something went wrong before taking her health seriously.
Her numbers weren’t necessarily telling her that she was in immediate trouble.
But she understood something important:
Good health isn’t only about avoiding illness today. It’s about creating the strength, mobility, confidence, and independence you want to have years from now.
She decided she wanted a different future—and that meant starting to build it now.
One Small Victory at a Time
Transformation can feel overwhelming when you focus only on the finish line.
Tam learned to focus instead on the next achievable goal.
First came 20 pounds.
Then 30 pounds.
Then another challenge.
And another.
Rather than waiting until everything felt perfect, she kept moving forward and allowed those smaller wins to build confidence.
Eventually, something changed.
Fitness was no longer simply something she was trying to do.
It was becoming part of who she was.
That shift eventually led Tam to something she had never done before: competing in a DEKA fitness competition.
For someone who once weighed 310 pounds, simply entering a fitness competition represented an incredible milestone.
But Tam wasn’t finished.
The Goal Waiting at 259 Pounds
Tam had another goal in mind—one that had nothing to do with looking a certain way.
She wanted to go skydiving.
There was one obstacle.
She needed to reach the required weight limit.
That gave Tam another meaningful target to work toward.
Eventually, she reached 259 pounds and was able to do what once seemed almost impossible:
She jumped from an airplane at 13,000 feet.
It wasn’t simply about losing 51 pounds.
It was about experiencing something her previous lifestyle might have prevented her from ever doing.
And that is one of the most powerful lessons from Tam’s story:
Sometimes weight loss isn’t the destination. It creates access to a life you previously couldn’t fully experience.
There Was No Single “Magic” Solution
Tam’s transformation didn’t come from one secret workout or a quick fix.
It came from combining several habits consistently.
Training became part of her normal routine.
She paid closer attention to nutrition.
She tracked her food.
She prioritized protein.
She drank more water.
She meal prepped.
She rested.
And perhaps most importantly, she kept showing up.
Tam also discusses using a GLP-1 medication for approximately three months during her journey.
But she is clear that it was only one tool within a much larger lifestyle change.
The work still mattered.
The workouts still mattered.
Nutrition still mattered.
Accountability still mattered.
Consistency still mattered.
That distinction is important because sustainable transformation is rarely created by one isolated tool.
It happens when healthier behaviors become part of your lifestyle.
Why Community Changes Everything
Tam didn’t take this journey alone.
Her daughter helped inspire her to begin, and the people surrounding her at IMPACT-X Performance became an important part of helping her continue.
That sense of community matters more than many people realize.
There are days when motivation disappears.
There are weeks when progress feels slow.
There are moments when quitting seems easier than continuing.
Having coaches and a community who notice when you show up—and notice when you don’t—can completely change the experience.
Instead of relying only on motivation, you begin building accountability.
Instead of struggling alone, you have people beside you.
Instead of wondering whether you belong in a gym, you begin feeling like you’re part of something.
That’s how a workout can begin turning into a lifestyle.
Your Identity Has to Grow With Your Goals
One of the deeper themes in Tam’s story is identity.
Physical transformation is visible.
But some of the most important changes happen internally.
Every time Tam completed another workout, she proved something to herself.
Every pound lost was evidence that change was possible.
Every challenge completed strengthened her confidence.
Every time she showed up when quitting would have been easier, she became a little more like the person she wanted to be.
The goal wasn’t simply to become someone who had lost weight.
It was to become someone who was willing to challenge herself.
Someone who could keep going when something was difficult.
Someone who was capable of doing things she once believed were beyond her.
Facing Fear at 13,000 Feet
Standing at the edge of an airplane is a powerful metaphor for transformation.
You can prepare.
You can train.
You can think about it.
You can talk about doing it.
But eventually, there comes a moment when you have to move forward.
Tam had already faced that moment many times before she ever stepped onto the airplane.
Walking into the gym was a step.
Changing how she ate was a step.
Signing up for DEKA was a step.
Continuing after difficult days was a step.
Skydiving simply became the most dramatic representation of something she had already been practicing:
Doing hard things even when fear is present.
Stop Trying to Change Everything Overnight
One of the most practical lessons from Tam’s journey is also one of the simplest:
You don’t need to solve your entire future today.
Trying to lose 50, 80, or 100 pounds can feel overwhelming.
Trying to completely rebuild your health can feel overwhelming.
Instead, focus on the next step.
Can you make it to today’s workout?
Can you make a better choice at your next meal?
Can you drink enough water today?
Can you prepare your meals for tomorrow?
Can you simply refuse to quit this week?
Small victories begin to accumulate.
And eventually, you may look back and realize that those small decisions have created an entirely different life.
Giving Up Isn’t the Plan
Tam’s message throughout the episode is simple:
Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to feel completely ready.
And you certainly don’t have to transform your entire life overnight.
You simply need to keep moving.
Because the biggest transformation may not be the number you eventually see on the scale.
It may be discovering just how much you’re capable of.
Tam started at 310 pounds.
Along the way she became stronger, entered her first DEKA competition, changed her relationship with fitness, built healthier habits, and ultimately jumped from an airplane at 13,000 feet.
The weight loss mattered.
But the life she discovered along the way mattered even more.
What Could Your Next Step Look Like?
Maybe your goal isn’t skydiving.
Maybe you simply want to walk upstairs without getting winded.
Maybe you want to feel stronger.
Lose weight.
Improve your mobility.
Complete your first fitness event.
Have more energy.
Keep up with your children or grandchildren.
Or feel confident in your own body again.
Whatever your goal looks like, the principle remains the same:
Start where you are. Take the next step. Keep showing up.
You don’t need to wait for something to go wrong before taking care of yourself.
Your future is something you can begin building today.
